How to Prevent an Emergency Heating Situation

January 10, 2017 by Cranbury Comfort

emergency heating repairDuring the winter, the last thing you need is an emergency heat situation to leave you out in the cold. What can you do to prevent such a situation?

Here are some tips to keep your heat running smoothly:

Change filters regularly.

It’s wise to check filters once a month to see how dirty they are. When they are dirty, they need to be changed. Typically, this is every three months. If there are allergies or pets in the house, it may need to be done more often. If the home is seldom used, it may only need to be changed every 6 months. The dirtier your filter, the harder your system needs to work.

Make sure vents and air returns aren’t blocked by furniture.

In order for your system to work properly, the air needs to circulate. Avoid overworking the system which can lead to system failure.

heat pump snowClear away ice and snow from the heat pump.

The heat pump works by taking in air that is surrounding the heat pump. If air is blocked by ice and snow, the unit will strain itself trying to get air into its system. Whenever there is a snowfall, be sure the top, sides, and underneath (if accessible) are clear of accumulated snow.

Have a preventative maintenance contract so that potential problems can be addressed before they cause the system to break down.

Let the experts examine each part of the system so that the worn out parts can be repaired or replaced before they create an emergency situation.

Monitor fuel usage.

If your system is using more fuel than usual, that could be a sign that it is not working properly. Be on the safe side and call an expert to come take a look.

Contact Cranbury Comfort to get your system into good working order before the next cold snap comes. That way you are not left in the cold with an emergency heat situation.
