Ask about Energy Saving Programs Offered by Your Electric Company

Your electric company may offer several programs to help you reduce your energy bill. If you are low income, you may qualify for their low-income energy bill assistance program. This program will offer you a discount on your rate, as well as your monthly account usage fee. They may also offer a program where you can have your meter put on your hot water heater and air conditioner so that it will shut off during certain times of the day and you will use less energy.

They may even offer a program to help you make your home more energy-efficient such as having your appliances updated to energy-saving ones, sealing any leaks in your windows or roof, putting more insulation in your home or even replacing your windows with energy-saving vinyl ones. This program is usually for those who qualify based on income. By speaking with your service provider, you can determine what options you have available to you.

How to Reduce the Amount of Money Spent on Your Energy Bill

There are several ways that you can reduce your energy bill on your own. Keep blinds and drapes closed to keep in warmth during the winter and block out excess heat during the summer. You will be amazed at how much of a difference it can make inside of your home by simply having the blinds and drapes closed.
Keep your thermostat at a regular temperature. Aim for 68 during the winter and 78 in the summer. Put plastic around your doors and windows to block out any drafts during the winter. Drafts can cost you as much as 20 percent on your energy bill. Make sure you change your air filter regularly and service your unit once a year. A dirty air filter will make your furnace and air conditioner run more often because it has to fight to push the air through the dirt.

Taking the time to do what you need to for your unit can make a world of difference in how much you are going to spend on your energy bill every month. Speak to a trained HVAC technician today about what you need to do to improve the efficiency in your home.
