Preparing Your HVAC for Winter’s Storms

December 31, 2018

Man shoveling snow around his heat pump.Preparing your HVAC system for winter’s storms will ensure your family’s comfort and so much more.

These tips can reduce your heating bill, prolong the life of your equipment, and be more energy-efficient:

  1. Replace an aging heating system – The lifespan of a furnace is 15 -20 years with regular maintenance. If your furnace is getting old, struggling to keep your home warm, costing more to run and repair it may be time to replace it. A new heating system can save you money (click for money-saving coupons) and keep your home more comfortable in the long run.
  2. Yearly Maintenance – Preventative maintenance is the first and most important part of preparing your HVAC for harsh weather.  Our certified professional technicians will make sure your system is ready for when your family needs your heating system the most.
  3. Clear and clean air vents and ducts – Furniture, such as couches, can block your air vents and limit the airflow in your home. This can cause uncomfortable changes in temperature in your living space.  Make sure all your air ducts are properly cleaned and open so that heat can circulate throughout your home easily.
  4. Check your filters – Replacing dirty air filters will increase the airflow in your home.  If your filters need replacement it can make it hard for heat to get across your home.
  5. Maintain your heat pump – Most heat pumps are easy to take care of.  They are designed so that snow does not collect on top of it.  During a heavy snow or ice storm, you should still check to make sure it is clear.  Airflow can be blocked due to an accumulation of snow and ice.  Don’t build something over it to avoid accumulating snow; this can also affect proper airflow.
  6. Make sure the thermostats in your home are working properly – If your thermostat is not accurate your home will not be comfortable. Programmable thermostats help reduce costs by adjusting temperatures based on your needs.
  7. Plan ahead – If you have an oil furnace, be sure you have enough oil in the tank.  When storms arrive fuel oil trucks may not be able to get to you or be backed up for deliveries.
